For most of Kikoff's life as a mobile app, fixing a bug meant a week-long wait: build a new version, submit it to Apple and Google, wait for review, wait for users to install. That's the store-review tax, and every mobile team pays it by default. Big companies like Uber and Airbnb engineer around it with expensive internal systems. We used a cheaper option that only recently became possible for our stack, and went from week-long bug fixes to same-day ones. This is the story of how, and why most mobile teams still haven't caught up.

React Native has had code push since 2015. Flutter didn't, because AOT-compiled Dart can't just hot-swap a JS bundle. Shorebird forked the Flutter engine to load Dart patches at runtime. We wired it up, tuned the sharp edges (rollback detection, cold-start race conditions, a state machine visible in Amplitude), and now ship Dart-only fixes in hours. This is the geeky walkthrough: the YAML, the Completer, the UpdateStatus switch, the Amplitude funnel that makes the whole thing debuggable.
